Digital Technology and Safer Internet Week – 6th to 10th February
As part of our AIM@Digital programme we are always keen to promote positive behaviour online. During the past week we have been studying digital technology, computational thinking and online safety. Take look at some of the exciting things we got up to…
Digital Champions Assembly: #SID2017 Launch
On Monday 6th February our Digital Champions prepared and presented an assembly to the whole school about safe internet use to get us ready for Safer Internet Day 2017. Woodcroft Digital Champions are pupils that work with Mr Guest, our IT Lead Teacher, in a weekly club to manage our online applications and support their classes.
Safer Internet Day 2017: Be the change: unite for a better internet
Safer Internet Day 2017 was celebrated globally on Tuesday 7th February with the theme ‘Be the change: unite for a better internet’. Every class throughout the school took part in activities during PSHE lessons discovering how to show good manners while on the internet, and learning about online safety. We call this Digital Wisdom at Woodcroft.
Technology Day
Every year group was set two challenges:
Challenge 1: Try out a new application or digital resource that you haven’t used before
Challenge 2: Develop computational thinking through an ‘unplugged’ activity; learning about computing and coding without using any technology!
Some amazing activities took place! Here is just a small sample…
Unplugged: Physical Pac Man, debugging baking recipes, creating physical email servers, following algorithm instructions and musical coding!
Plugged: Digital film making, applications for leaning, Google G Suite, Storybird, WeVideo and Beebot coding.
Online Safety Parent Workshop
On Thursday 9th February parents were invited to a workshop to discuss the complex issues encountered when children use devices to go online. Mr Guest presented the outcomes from Woodcroft’s most recent pupil surveys and highlighted some of the main issues. Practical ideas for how to help your child and links to recommended websites were also given.

Woodcroft was visited by PC Rolfe and Support Officer Davies from the Met Police’s Safer Transport Team on Monday 30th January. Last term, local pupils were set the task of promoting safer driving in their families through the Parents Promise Licence activity. Today, PC Rolfe returned to thank Woodcroft for its support and present certificates and prizes to the winners.
We were informed that there had been a 50% reduction in accidents on local roads during the Police’s initiative. Well done to all of the pupils and families who took part.
Woodcroft S&W Netball Champions
Congratulations to the Woodcroft Netball Team who successfully defended their title as Barnet S&W Champions. A tense final against The Orion went into extra time until Woodcroft got the goal that mattered to retain their title!
24 teams from across the South and West of the district competed on a bitterly cold January day. Despite slipping up in a group stage match against Frith Manor, when the net eluded our attackers, we made it through to the quarter finals. Victories followed against Bell Lane and then Goldbeaters put us in the final against The Orion. It turned out to be a very evenly matched game, both sides had chances to win, but after normal time the scores remained level at 1-1. That was when Daniel found his form at the vital moment during the sudden death ‘golden goal’ finale. He confidently slotted home the ball following a swift Woodcroft counter attack. Well done to the entire team who all played their positions wonderfully. We must also congratulate our development B team who performed well in their own group stage games. Thank you to our support staff, coaches Mr Patel, Mr Judd, and first aider Mrs Clark. Training now begins again as we prepare for the borough wide finals next month!
Woodcroft Year 4 Winners
Teams from Year 4 took part in the 3rd bi-annual ConnectED Dodgeball Festival on Thursday 19th January. This event, hosted at Woodcroft, is sponsored by TutorHunt who provide free coaching through Foundation Sports for Woodcroft, Goldbeaters and The Orion. All of the pupils from across the three schools played with energy and enthusiasm. A team from Woodcroft were unbeaten throughout the tournament and successfully won the trophy for the second time.
The spring term is looking as exciting as ever with lots of activities already planned. This term we will be having a number of special event weeks:
Internet Safety Week begins on 6th February. In addition to assemblies and lessons we will be having a special Technology Day on the 7th February and parent workshops on Thursday 9th February.
The Big Read Week starts on 28th February to coincide with World Book Day (on March 2nd). There will be lots of reading activities including a live theatre performance of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, plus competitions, buddy reading and storytelling sessions.
Visual Arts Week starts on Monday 20th February. This term’s theme is Fashion as the week coincides with London Fashion Week. We are planning lots of activities based around famous designers, jewellery, historical clothing, textiles, printing and international costume.
Red Nose Day is on Friday 24th March. We will raise money through a funny fashion non-uniform day! Pupils can hilariously accessorise their clothes, dress back to front or inside out or mix and match some crazy colours. You could even come in your beach wear! Whatever you choose; the funnier the better.
The WOW Factor takes place at the end of term. Pupils will be starting to plan their acts for this year’s exciting competition. Class auditions begin on 6th March with the grand final show scheduled for the evening of 29th March.

Oh no it isn’t – Oh yes it is! The Key Stage 1 and Foundation Stage Panto
It’s Staff Panto Day at Woodcroft! First to perform, if that’s the correct description, were the KS1 and Foundation Stage Staff with their take on Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhyme – ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’
Act 2 – Key Stage 2!
Our second show of the day involved the Key Stage 2 Staff. The King had to choose his Queen, but did he make the right choice? Snow White was victorious in the end, helped by her Seven Dwarfs. Each show finished with an attempt at the mannequin challenge – log in to the TreeHouse Announcements page to see how we did! (click here)
We have enjoyed a series of fabulous Christmas shows over the past two week. All of our three different productions from Foundation Stage, Year 1 and Year 2 were full of seasonal music, singing, dance and drama. Well done to all of the pupils for their fantastic performances, and thank you all of the adults who helped bring these wonderful shows to the Woodcroft stage.
Year 2 – The Three Wise Guys
Year 1 – How To Be An Angel
Nursery and Reception – Christmas Counts for Everyone
Christmas begins with the Winter Ball
We enjoyed three separate discos on Friday 2nd December for pupils from Nursery to Year 6, all thanks to our resident DJ – Mr Raw! Thank you also to Friends of Woodcroft for organising this year’s event. The climax to the evening for Years 4 to 6 was our very own attempt at the mannequin challenge! School users can login to follow the link below and visit our virtual portal, The Tree House, to watch the video.
